Isaac Smith - Artist - The Pianist... an Oil Painting

Three instruments that stir my emotions are the cello, the piano and the viola. I wanted to paint visually how I see each instrument sounding when classical music is played. I portrayed the movement of the sound using shapes and color not only within the instrument but also the person playing because the emotion comes from the person.

This painting was to be a little different from the others in that I wanted to not only portray the movement of the sound but also of the performer. There are multiple hands layered on each other moving to reach the next keys to be played. Warm and cool colors are used to capture the sound of the high and low notes of the piano. I painted the arms and hands of the performer in multiple colors as well as the keyboard and internal portion of the piano as these are where the music and emotions come from. The body of the piano is in various blues to portray the music and to be in contrast from the multiple colors. I love to listen to a piano concerto while looking at this painting. It comes alive.
